A two-phase design competition in New York City’s Rockaway peninsula seeks storm-resilient and sustainable designs for Rockaway that can serve as models for other vulnerable waterfront communities. Rockaway was significantly damaged by Superstorm Sandy, and the FAR ROC —for a resilient Rockaway — design competition seeks innovative redevelopment strategies for the planning, design, and construction of a mixed-use, mixed-income site that would cover more than 32 ha (80 ac). Proposed designs should include new housing, employment, and recreational opportunities, as well as natural space that includes a 14-ha (35-ac) nature preserve, a 4-ha (9-ac) dune preserve, and a minimum of 1.3 ha (3.3 ac) of open space. Concepts are due by June 14. Finalists will receive $30,000 to further their concepts, and the winner will receive an additional $30,000.
