On Dec. 17, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) released its 2012 enforcement results. According to the agency, it levied $252 million in criminal fines and civil penalties to deter pollution, reducing 1 billion kg (2.2 billion lb) of air, water and land pollution, as well as 2 billion kg (4.4 billion lb) of hazardous waste. Furthermore, the agency invested $44 million in environmental projects that benefit communities, such as low-impact development. Specific to stormwater, 67% of large municipalities with combined sewer overflows are now addressing this issue, many with green infrastructure. In addition, compliance with drinking water standards has improved by 60%. EPA is also increasing public access to information with such tools as the pollutant loading tool.
